Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis emerged as the frontrunner among Republican voters following the first GOP presidential primary debate, according to a recent poll conducted by The Washington Post, FiveThirtyEight, and Ipsos.
The survey, which polled 775 potential Republican primary voters who watched the debate, revealed that 29% of respondents believed DeSantis delivered the strongest performance among the eight candidates on stage in Milwaukee.
Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy secured the second-best performance, garnering support from 26% of GOP voters in the poll. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley was the only other candidate to receive double-digit support, with 15% of GOP voters stating that she had the best night.
Former Vice President Mike Pence followed closely behind with 7% support, while South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie tied with 4%. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson both polled at 1% in the debate.
Andrew Romeo, communications director for the DeSantis campaign, expressed confidence in the governor's victory, stating, "Last night, Ron DeSantis was the clear winner and proved that he is ready to beat Joe Biden and serve as Americas 47th president. The debate highlighted that DeSantis is the only candidate with the vision to reverse our nations decline and revive the American Dream," in an interview with Fox News Digital.
The debate, hosted by Fox News, marked the beginning of a series of monthly debates organized by the Republican National Committee. The next debate, hosted by FOX Business, is scheduled to take place on September 27 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
