A block in Germantown, Maryland, was placed under lockdown by the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCDP) following a security dog's alert to possible explosives, as reported by local sources and confirmed by the police.
According to FOX5, a security dog owned by a private security guard employed by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Germantown campus detected the potential threat inside a vehicle at approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday. The dog made the discovery at a DOE checkpoint.
In response to the situation, MCDP issued a tweet around the same time, announcing the closure of the "19900 block of Germantown Rd" for investigation purposes. The tweet also mentioned that the closure was a result of an ongoing investigation by the Federal Protective Services.
MCDP advised motorists in the area to find an alternative route and warned them to anticipate significant delays due to the closure.
According to FOX5, the police department stated at around 11 a.m. that the investigation would be conducted off-site. Simultaneously, the DOE campus was reopened, as confirmed by a separate statement from MCDP. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
