Former President Barack Obama's private letter from 1982 has resurfaced, revealing his thoughts on sexuality and identity.
The letter, obtained by The Post, includes a redacted portion where Obama discusses his "androgynous" mind and his imagination of "making love to men daily." The letter was written to his ex-girlfriend, Alex McNear, when Obama was 21 years old.
In the letter, Obama reflects on homosexuality as an attempt to escape the complexities of earthly life. He writes, "You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination. My mind is androgynous to a great extent, and I hope to make it more so until I can think in terms of people, not women as opposed to men." However, he acknowledges his physical existence as a man and accepts that reality.
The salacious paragraphs of the letter were redacted by McNear, who later dated Obama during his time at Occidental College in Los Angeles. The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Garrow, who wrote a biography on Obama titled "Rising Star," discovered and included these redacted portions in his book.
The letter is currently owned by Emory University and is not allowed to be photographed or removed. Instead, Garrow's friend, Harvey Klehr, transcribed the redacted paragraphs by hand and provided them to The Post.
Obama, who is now a father of two and has been married to his wife Michelle since 1992, has not commented on the resurfacing of the letter. Garrow, when asked about Obama's musings, stated that it is not unusual for individuals to have sexual fantasies, and he believes it is a common aspect of human nature.
