Former President Donald Trump has expressed doubt about the independence of Delaware District Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Hunter Biden and the Department of Justice's handling of allegations against him.
In a statement, Trump criticized the Biden family, accusing them of wrongdoing and claiming that they have been protected by the Justice Department for years. He also questioned the impartiality of Weiss, suggesting that he may be trying to move the case to a more Democrat-friendly venue.
Trump stated, "If the special counsel is truly independent - even though he failed to bring proper charges after a four-year investigation and he appears to be trying to move the case to a more Democrat-friendly venue - he will quickly conclude that Joe Biden, his troubled son Hunter, and their enablers, including the media, should face the required consequences."
The appointment of Weiss as special counsel came after it was revealed that a plea deal with Hunter Biden had been dropped. Hunter Biden had been facing charges in Delaware for failure to pay taxes and a gun charge. The initial deal would have required him to take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments and would have included a pretrial diversion agreement for the gun charge. However, the deal fell apart when it was discovered that Hunter Biden would be precluded from facing any future charges related to not registering as a foreign agent while engaging in business deals overseas.
The skepticism expressed by Trump and the collapse of the plea deal have raised questions about the handling of the investigation into Hunter Biden. Critics argue that the Biden family has received preferential treatment from the Justice Department, while supporters maintain that the investigation is being conducted impartially.
As the investigation continues, the role of the special counsel and the actions of the Department of Justice will be closely scrutinized. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the Biden administration and its efforts to address allegations of wrongdoing within the Biden family.
