A former Wisconsin Democrat state lawmaker, Ryan Clancy, who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and currently a Milwaukee supervisor, made controversial comments about police officers on Facebook.
In response to a user's comment, Clancy stated, "All work had dignity and value, Even trolling. Not cops, though." When the user asked him to confirm if he believed that police officers had no value or dignity, Clancy responded, "So for the record you just state a Police Officer's job has NO VALUE OR DIGNITY. Just want you to verify that before I pass that along to some who might enjoy hearing it."
Clancy agreed with the user's statement, asserting that police officers' jobs have neither dignity nor value. He also questioned the user's motives and occupation, suggesting that they were a full-time troll.
Clancy's comments have drawn criticism, particularly in light of the rising crime rates in the United States. The incident comes shortly after a teenage girl was arrested for assaulting a family on the New York City subway.
The 16-year-old, whose name has not been released due to her age, turned herself in to the police and was charged with two felony counts of assault. The attack, which was captured on video, showed the teenager physically assaulting a 51-year-old woman and using racial slurs against the Asian family.
In response to the backlash, Clancy clarified his remarks, stating that he did not attack individual police officers but rather criticized policing as an institution. He argued that policing, rooted in a history of "slave catching" and union busting, is inherently racist and classist and cannot be reformed.
