President Donald Trump has signaled support for suspending the federal gas tax for a period of time as Americans grapple with soaring fuel costs, saying the levy would be restored once prices retreat to more manageable levels.
Speaking with CBS reporter Nancy Cordes, the president endorsed the idea outright, stating, I think it's a great idea. Yup, we're going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we'll let it phase back in. According to The Post Millennial, Senator Josh Hawley has already pledged to advance the proposal in the Senate, aligning congressional action with the presidents push to provide immediate relief at the pump.
Since the launch of Operation Epic Fury in Iran on February 28, gas prices have surged nationwide, in some areas by more than 50 percent. On Sunday, the national average reached $4.52 per gallon, according to AAA, a painful spike for working families already squeezed by inflation.
The federal gas tax currently stands at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel, but suspending it requires an act of Congress, underscoring the importance of legislative follow-through. After Trumps remarks, Hawley announced he would introduce a bill to halt collection of the tax, framing it as a direct response to the administrations call for relief.
On the House side, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida said she will move in tandem with the presidents agenda by offering companion legislation. This week I will be introducing a bill in the House to suspend the federal gas tax in light of Trumps recent remarks. American families need this relief on gas prices. My office will be working directly with President Trump to ensure we deliver this win for the American people," Luna posted on X.
The spike in fuel costs has been driven in part by constrained supply, as Iranian forces have repeatedly attempted to disrupt maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global energy shipments. Even as the United States has significantly degraded the Iranian regimes military capabilities, the president has maintained a firm stance, reiterating that he will not permit Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons, a move that would further destabilize an already volatile region.
