Vice President JD Vance has publicly thanked Pope Leo XIV for tempering reports of a rift with President Donald Trump over the Iran conflict, saying he was grateful for the pontiffs clarification.
According to Breitbart, Vances remarks followed the Popes effort to cool media speculation about tensions with the Trump administration, after earlier comments on global conflict were widely interpreted as a rebuke of U.S. policy. In a post on X, Vance praised the pontiff as a shepherd focused on eternal truths, writing that Pope Leo preaches the gospel, as he should, and that will inevitably mean he offers his opinions on the moral issues of the day.
Vances statement was prompted by the Popes remarks to reporters during his flight to Angola, according to Reuters, where the pontiff stressed that comments he made two days earlier in Cameroon had been prepared two weeks ago. The Pope further complained that reporting about comments he has made so far during his Africa tour has not been accurate in all its aspects, suggesting that media outlets had been eager to frame his words as a direct confrontation with President Trump.
I am grateful to Pope Leo for saying this, Vance wrote, pushing back on the press narrative of open conflict between Rome and Washington. While the media narrative constantly gins up conflict-and yes, real disagreements have happened and will happen-the reality is often much more complicated.
Vance emphasized that the administration respects the Churchs moral voice while bearing the burden of real-world decision-making in a dangerous world. Pope Leo preaches the gospel, as he should, and that will inevitably mean he offers his opinions on the moral issues of the day, he added, before underscoring that The Presidentand the entire administrationwork to apply those moral principles in a messy world.
During his speech in Cameroon, the Pope had warned that the world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants, Fox News reported, language that global media quickly weaponized against Western leaders rather than the actual despots destabilizing entire regions. We must make a decisive change of course a true conversion that will lead us in the opposite direction, onto a sustainable path rich in human fraternity, the Pope said, invoking a broad moral appeal rather than a specific policy prescription.
President Trump, who has long resisted clerical second-guessing of his national security agenda, had earlier criticized the pontiffs political posture in a Truth Social post on April 12. Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy, Trump wrote at the time, arguing that the Pope talks about fear of the Trump Administration, but doesnt mention the FEAR that the Catholic Church, and all other Christian Organizations, had during COVID when they were arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else, for holding Church Services, even when outside, and being ten and even twenty feet apart.'
Trumps comments followed the Popes appeal for unilateral restraint, in which the pontiff urged those who have weapons to lay them down, a message critics say ignores the moral duty to confront aggressors. Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace! the Pope said during Easter Mass, insisting, Not a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue! Not with the desire to dominate others, but to encounter them!
As the media continues to amplify every perceived clash, Vances intervention highlights a more nuanced reality: a White House attempting to safeguard American interests while still engaging, however contentiously, with a Vatican inclined toward pacifist rhetoric in a world where tyrants rarely disarm themselves.
