A Minnesota man has been arrested after allegedly impersonating an FBI agent in a bizarre attempt to spring an accused murderer from a New York City federal jail.
According to The Post Millennial, prosecutors say Mark Anderson, a Minnesota native, walked into the intake area of the Metropolitan Detention Center claiming he carried a judges order to release inmate Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of murdering UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson. When staff demanded identification, Anderson allegedly declared that he had "weapons in [his] bag," prompting a search that uncovered a BBQ fork and a "round steel blade" resembling a pizza cutter, as described in court documents reviewed by NBC News.
Officials in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York said Anderson then tried to hurl a stack of papers at Bureau of Prisons employees once it became clear he was not a federal agent. When pressed to produce the supposed court order, he instead handed over miscellaneous paperwork, including a document explaining how to sue the Department of Justice, according to authorities.
"Anderson also displayed and threw at (Bureau of Prisons) officers numerous documents," the complaint stated. "They appear to be related to filing claims against the United States Department of Justice." He was taken into custody and charged with impersonating an FBI agent, a serious offense that underscores the need for strict enforcement of law-and-order principles.
Anderson had reportedly come to New York City for a job opportunity that ultimately fell through and had been working at a pizza parlor, the New York Post reported. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday, just days before Mangiones own expected court date, in a case that highlights growing public concern over violent crime and the integrity of the justice system.
