Democratic Texas Representative Henry Cuellar has announced his intention to seek reelection, reaffirming his commitment to the Democratic Party.
This declaration comes amid a swirl of controversy, as President Donald Trump recently issued pardons to Cuellar and his wife, dismissing their 2024 bribery indictment as a politically charged maneuver by the Biden administration's Department of Justice.
During an appearance on "Special Report with Bret Baier," Cuellar was directly questioned about his political aspirations and confirmed his plans to run as a Democrat.
According to the Daily Caller, Cuellar, who identifies as a conservative Democrat, emphasized his willingness to collaborate across party lines. "Look, Im a conservative Democrat, and I work across the lines, and I want to see the president succeed. President Trump, and its good for the country, and I will work with anybody," Cuellar stated.
Despite his support for President Trump, Cuellar clarified that his party affiliation remains unchanged. "We might have some differences, but if I can work with them, I will work with President Trump," he added, noting his belief that his voting record aligns more closely with some Republicans than members of his own caucus.
The allegations against Cuellar and his wife involve accusations of accepting approximately $600,000 from Azerbaijani officials and a Mexican financial institution between 2014 and 2021, purportedly in exchange for leveraging his congressional influence to benefit Azerbaijan. Both Cuellar and his wife have consistently denied these claims.
Cuellar has maintained his position in the House since 2005, demonstrating resilience in the face of these accusations. Expressing gratitude for the pardon, Cuellar wrote on X, "I thank God for standing with my family and I during this difficult time.
This decision clears the air and lets us move forward for South Texas. This pardon gives us a clean slate. The noise is gone. The work remains. And I intend to meet it head on."
Cuellar's political stance as a centrist Democrat from a predominantly Hispanic district has often placed him at odds with the Biden administration, particularly regarding border policies. He has criticized President Joe Biden's handling of border issues and has not hesitated to support Republican-led initiatives, such as legislation addressing migrant crime and safeguarding women's sports.
Additionally, Cuellar diverged from Democratic leadership by endorsing a bipartisan proposal to end the government shutdown in November, underscoring his commitment to pragmatic governance over partisan allegiance.
