California State Senator Scott Wiener has officially announced his candidacy for the United States Congress, aiming to succeed Nancy Pelosi in representing San Francisco.
Wiener's campaign is rooted in a commitment to counter what he perceives as a "takeover" by President Trump and his supporters, while advocating for progressive values and tangible advancements in housing, healthcare, clean energy, and civil rights.
"Its official: Im running for Congress to represent San Francisco! Ill fight Trumps takeover, for our values, & for real progress. Ive delivered on housing, healthcare, clean energy, and civil rights and Ill do it again. Lets build the future our city & country deserve," Wiener declared.
According to The Post Millennial, Wiener, in his announcement video, drew on his family's history of fleeing fascism in Europe to underscore his concerns about the current political climate in the United States. He expressed his determination to safeguard San Francisco's legacy of being "on the right side of history" and emphasized his commitment to defending the city's values, its people, and the Constitution.
"My family escaped fascism in Europe. I never thought the United States would slip into fascism like were seeing today," he stated. Furthermore, Wiener asserted that "Trump and his MAGA extremists dont scare me. They wont stop me or the people of our great city from fighting back and doing whats right."
In Congress, Wiener pledges to hold insurance companies accountable to ensure families receive necessary medical care, protect LGBTQ youth and families, and advocate for increased housing to foster an affordable, inclusive, and innovative city. His legislative record in California includes several contentious bills, such as one designating California as a "state of refuge for trans kids and their families."
This law prevents law enforcement from executing out-of-state warrants related to gender-affirming healthcare for minors.
Wiener has also been involved in other legislative efforts, including co-authoring a bill that would have required judges to consider a parent's willingness to allow a child to undergo gender transition during custody hearings. This bill, however, was vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Additionally, Wiener has championed legislation permitting trans-identified males in women's prisons, proposed incorporating drag queen classes into grade school curricula, and supported legal action against a school district's policy mandating parental notification of a child's gender transition.
Wiener's support for the Folsom Street Fair, an annual open-air kink festival in San Francisco, has drawn criticism. The event features vendors selling sex toys, BDSM demonstrations, and other extreme fetish activities, including a pool where attendees can urinate on others.
Despite the controversy surrounding his legislative initiatives and public endorsements, Wiener remains steadfast in his pursuit of a congressional seat, aiming to further his progressive agenda on a national stage.
