Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has attempted to redirect the blame for the tragic assassination of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk towards advocates of the Second Amendment.
Kirk was tragically shot during a TPUSA "Prove Me Wrong" event at Utah Valley University, where he engaged with attendees through a question-and-answer format. Ocasio-Cortez criticized members of Congress who oppose gun control, asserting they lack the moral standing to "finger-point" following Kirk's assassination.
"People can finger-point all they want. Look at the record, look at the actions of what we are doing," Ocasio-Cortez declared to reporters outside the Capitol. "I dont think a single person who has dedicated their entire career to preventing gun safety legislation from getting passed in this House has any right to blame anybody else but themselves for what is happening."
According to the Daily Caller, both the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) issued statements condemning the assassination of Kirk, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Ocasio-Cortez also referenced the tragic killings of Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortmann of Minnesota and her husband, noting that the accused killer claimed to be acting on behalf of Democratic Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota in a letter to the FBI, as reported by the New York Daily News.
Additionally, she drew parallels to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, aligning with other Democrats such as Senators Adam Schiff of California, Chris Murphy of Connecticut, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Ocasio-Cortez advocated for the regulation of conservative media while controversially describing pro-Hamas protestors as "peaceful," despite numerous arrests.
In a further display of partisan tension, House Democrats refused to allow a prayer for Kirk after the shooting, dismissing a request by Republican Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado. This action incited a vehement response from Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, who exclaimed, "Yall caused this! You fucking own this!"
Luna, who previously served as the Director of Hispanic Outreach at TPUSA, expressed her outrage at the perceived lack of respect.
Charlie Kirk, who established TPUSA in June 2012, aimed to foster conservative values among college and high school students. His influence extended through "The Charlie Kirk Show," a podcast that evolved into a radio program on the Salem Radio Network, as detailed on the TPUSA website.
The assassination of Kirk raises critical questions about the intersection of political discourse, media influence, and the ongoing debate over gun control in America.
