President Donald Trump has declared that Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York City, will be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian accolade in the United States.
This announcement signifies the first such award Trump has bestowed during his second term in office.
As reported by Breitbart, President Trump took to Truth Social to share the news, stating, "As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Countrys highest civilian honor. Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded at the President's discretion to individuals who have made "especially meritorious" contributions to the nation's security, world peace, cultural endeavors, or other significant achievements.
The timing of this announcement coincides with Giuliani's recent hospitalization following a car accident in New Hampshire. According to Michael Ragusa, Giuliani's head of security, the former mayor had stopped to assist a domestic violence victim and called 911 before his vehicle was "struck from behind at high speed" on the highway.
Giuliani sustained a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations, contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg. Despite these injuries, Ragusa reported that Giuliani is "in good spirits and recovering tremendously."
Supporters, including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Michigan State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, have expressed their well-wishes for Giuliani's recovery through social media.
Giuliani, who served as New York City's mayor from 1994 to 2001, is widely recognized for his leadership in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. His longstanding alliance with President Trump includes serving as Trump's personal attorney during his first administration.
Trump's decision to honor Giuliani with the Medal of Freedom contrasts sharply with the choices made by his predecessor, Joe Biden. Biden's recipients included figures such as former Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, activist Megan Rapinoe, billionaire George Soros, and Raul Yzaguirre, former President of the National Council of La Raza.
These selections have been criticized by some conservatives for allegedly politicizing the award.
Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow remarked that Biden's choices "made a mockery of this country," suggesting that the former President "reduced it to trolling." The announcement of Giuliani's award underscores a return to honoring individuals who align with traditional conservative values and have demonstrated unwavering patriotism.
