In a fervent appeal, Representative Maxine Waters, a Democrat from California, has called for the invocation of the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump.
Her remarks came during a discussion about the President's decision to remove Lisa Cook from her position on the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors. Waters expressed her concerns about Trump's fitness for office, emphasizing the potential danger his actions pose to the nation and its democratic principles.
"It is time to call for Article [Amendment] 25 of the Constitution of the United States of America to determine his unfitness, to determine that somethings wrong with this President," Waters declared on MSNBC's "The Weeknight."
She urged for a swift and decisive response, arguing that the situation is "absolutely one of the most destructive things that this president could do." According to Fox News, President Trump dismissed Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook on Monday, accusing her of misrepresenting mortgage information. This move has sparked significant controversy and concern over its potential impact on the economy.
Waters warned of the broader implications of Cook's removal, stating, "This stands to basically upend the entire economy. This stands to really deal with what is going to happen on Wall Street, whats going to happen with interest rates, whats going to happen with the President of the United States being able to make decisions that he will personally benefit from." She stressed the urgency of the matter, advocating for aggressive action rather than relying on judicial intervention.
In response to her dismissal, Lisa Cook has filed a lawsuit against President Trump, contending that her removal lacked just cause and seeking a restraining order to maintain her position at the Federal Reserve. This legal battle is anticipated to escalate to the Supreme Court, marking a significant confrontation between the White House and the Federal Reserve.
During the MSNBC panel discussion, host Symone Sanders-Townsend sought the perspective of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democrat from Florida, following Waters' call for the 25th Amendment. Sanders remarked, "I think its jarring to hear Congresswoman Waters say its time for the 25th Amendment. But, I mean, presidents have been impeached for much less."
Wasserman Schultz contended that President Trump's ultimate aim is to dismiss Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. "Donald Trumps real preference is to fire Jerome Powell. But he knows that thats a bridge too far," she explained.
Instead, she argued, Trump is attempting to disrupt the Federal Reserve's operations by targeting Lisa Cook, despite the absence of any investigation into her actions. "By the way, the so-called fraud that she is being accused of, she didnt even get preferred interest rates on any of the mortgages that she obtained, which demonstrates that she didnt break the law. Its preposterous," Wasserman Schultz asserted.
