In a recent exchange, President Donald Trump and Maryland Governor Wes Moore have been at loggerheads over the issue of crime rates in Maryland.
The President, in a direct message to the Democratic Governor, urged him to "stop talking and get to work.".
The President had recently deployed the National Guard to bolster security in Washington, D.C., in response to escalating crime rates over the past few years. Governor Moore was among the officials who voiced their disapproval of this move.
According to the Western Journal, Governor Moore penned a letter to President Trump on August 21, in which he argued that Baltimore, notorious for being one of the most dangerous cities in the country, had managed to reduce crime rates without any public spectacle.
"Even in the face of millions of dollars in cuts to federal funding for violence intervention and gun violence prevention under your administration including to programs directly credited with lowering rates of homicide and other violent crimes our state and local communities continue to invest in proven strategies that help us build safer, more vibrant neighborhoods," Moore wrote.
The Governor attributed a 20 percent decrease in Maryland homicides to an "all-of-the-above approach to public safety" that addresses "the root causes of crime." He stated, "If theres anything Maryland has proven over the last two years, its that we can achieve performance without being performative."
However, crime in Maryland, while decreasing, is far from eradicated. A recent report from The Hill, a left-leaning outlet, ranked Baltimore, Maryland's most populous city, as having the third-highest rate of violent crime among U.S. cities with a population of 500,000 or more. This analysis was based on FBI crime statistics.
Following his remarks, Governor Moore extended an invitation to President Trump to join the next "public safety walk" in Baltimore, scheduled for the following month. The President's response was less than enthusiastic.
"Governor Wes Moore of Maryland has asked, in a rather nasty and provocative tone, that I walk the streets of Maryland with him. I assume he is talking about out of control, crime ridden, Baltimore?" Trump posted Sunday on Truth Social.
The President suggested that Governor Moore should first "clean up this Crime disaster" before he would consider joining him for a "walk." He criticized Moore's record on crime, suggesting that he may be manipulating crime statistics, a practice he accused other "Blue States" of doing.
President Trump offered to deploy military resources to "quickly clean up the Crime," stating that "after only one week, there is NO CRIME AND NO MURDER IN DC!" He stated that only after this would he "proudly 'walk the streets' with the failing, because of Crime, Governor of Maryland."
In a final note, President Trump pointed out that "Baltimore is ranked the 4th WORST CITY IN THE NATION IN CRIME & MURDER." He ended his message with a call to action for Governor Moore: "Stop talking and get to work, Wes. Ill then see you on the streets!!!"
This exchange underscores the ongoing debate over crime rates and the best strategies to combat them, a debate that is likely to continue as both parties strive to ensure the safety and security of their constituents.
