California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat currently serving his second term, has expressed grave concerns about the future of American democracy.
He has voiced his belief that President Donald Trump's jest about running for a third term in 2028 is not a joke but a serious threat. Newsom, who is speculated to be gearing up for a presidential run in 2028, shared his apprehensions in a conversation with Chris Cadelago of Politico, as reported by RealClearPolitics.
According to Breitbart, Newsom stated, "I dont think Donald Trump wants another election." He went on to question Trump's intentions, saying, "Who spends $200 million on a ballroom at their home and then leaves the house? This is serious, guys. This is serious."
The governor's remarks reflect his belief that Trump's actions are a serious threat to the democratic principles of the United States.
Newsom's conversation with Cadelago continued, with the latter asking if the governor anticipated a Newsom-Trump face-off in 2028. In response, Newsom expressed his doubts about Trump's commitment to free and fair elections, citing the events of January 6th. "This guy doesnt believe in free, fair elections. He tried to wreck this country. Were you there, January 6th?" Newsom asked.
The governor further criticized Trump's actions, saying, "I mean, he tried to light democracy on fire. He dialed for almost 12,000 votes. Now hes doing it in plain sight."
Newsom's comments underscore his belief that Trump's actions are not to be taken lightly, and that they pose a real threat to the democratic fabric of the nation.
Despite Newsom's concerns, Trump has previously addressed the issue of a third term. In May, he told NBC News, "I will say this: so many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that, but its something that, to the best of my knowledge, youre not allowed to do."
He further clarified, "Im looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally, a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward, but I think well have four years, And I think four years is plenty of time to do something really spectacular."
However, Newsom remains unconvinced by Trump's assurances. He expressed his anxiety, saying, "Im not calm, and Im not going to submit myself to niceties. Not when this guy is trying to wreck our goddamn country." This statement reflects Newsom's deep-seated concerns about the potential impact of Trump's actions on the future of the United States.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the potential for a Newsom-Trump showdown in 2028 remains a topic of speculation. However, one thing is clear: Newsom is deeply concerned about the future of American democracy and is not afraid to voice his fears.
His comments serve as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding democratic principles and the potential dangers of complacency in the face of threats to these principles.
