Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic contender for Virginia's gubernatorial seat, has pledged to transform the state into a sanctuary haven by dismantling the immigration policies established by the current Republican governor, Glenn Youngkin.
Her stance on immigration is part of a broader agenda that aligns with progressive values, including support for transgender rights, which would permit biological males access to female locker rooms and restrooms.
Spanberger's positions reflect the broader platform of the far-left, which was largely rejected by the American electorate in the 2024 elections. Her commitment to reversing Youngkin's policies was made clear in an interview with the Virginia Mercury, where she articulated her intention to repeal Youngkin's February directive.
This directive mandates Virginia law enforcement to assist in federal immigration enforcement, a policy she criticizes for misallocating local resources and eroding community trust.
According to Gateway Pundit, Spanberger stated, I would rescind his executive order, yes, in reference to Youngkins Executive Order 47. This order empowers state police and corrections officers to engage in specific immigration duties and encourages local jails to cooperate fully with federal deportation efforts.
Youngkin defended the order as a measure to keep dangerous criminal illegal immigrants off the streets of Virginia. However, Spanberger argues that such enforcement diverts local agencies from their primary responsibilities and coerces state entities into federal civil enforcement roles.
Our immigration system is absolutely broken, Spanberger remarked. The idea that we would take local police officers or local sheriffs deputies in amid all the things that they have to do, like community policing or staffing our jails or investigating real crimes, so that they can go and tear families apart that is a misuse of those resources.
In the political arena, Spanberger has maintained a lead over her Republican rival, Winsome Earle-Sears, Virginia's current Lieutenant Governor. However, Earle-Sears has significantly narrowed the polling gap in recent days, rendering the race nearly even. For Virginia's electorate, the decision is stark.
Spanberger's platform signals a swift return to the policies that contributed to President Biden's unpopularity, presenting voters with a clear choice between progressive change and conservative governance.
