Joe Scarborough, the host of "Morning Joe," known for his left-leaning political stance, recently criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, for his attempts to emulate President Donald Trump.
Scarborough labeled Newsom's actions as "quite embarrassing," highlighting the Democrats' struggle to establish a firm footing.
According to WND, Scarborough expressed his disapproval on Wednesday, stating, "The Democrats are trying to find their footing and its quite embarrassing, actually. Gavin Newsom, I mean if youve seen what hes doing online." He further advised Newsom, "Dont try to turn the ship 180 degrees They dont know what to do!"
Scarborough suggested that Newsom should focus on issues such as affordability and housing, rather than trying to mimic Trump. He emphasized, "Donald Trumps not on the ballot in 26, hes not on the ballot in 28. Youre not running against Donald Trump!"
The Hill reported on Wednesday that Newsom has been attempting to provoke Trump and rally his Democratic supporters by adopting Trump's style, including his social media habits and his penchant for self-promotion. Newsom has even begun to write his social media posts in ALL CAPS, a characteristic trait of Trump's online presence.
In a recent conversation with author Brian Tyler Cohen, Newsom passionately urged, "Wake the f*** up to whats going on in this country. Were going to put everything on the damn line." He expressed his pride in the people of Texas and those attending the No Kings rally, asserting his belief in the Democrats' potential for victory in the upcoming elections.
Jamal Simmons, a Democrat strategist and former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris, told The Hill, "Democrats are over being the nice guy party. Standing up for Dem values doesnt mean you have to play by the old rules and Newsom in particular is showing hell go as low as he needs to to take on Trump."
However, Dana Perino, former White House Press Secretary under President George W. Bush, advised Newsom to abandon his Twitter antics.
She stated, "You have to stop it with the Twitter thing. If I were his wife, I would say: You are making a fool of yourself! Stop it! Do not let your staff tweet, and if youre doing it yourself, put the phone away and start over."
Online reactions to Newsom's strategy have been mixed, with some criticizing his attempts to portray himself as a conservative and others expressing concern that his actions may alienate his base. One comment read, "If Morning Joe thinks you are embarrassing then you know things are bad."
As the Democrats grapple with their identity in the post-Trump era, Newsom's approach serves as a stark reminder of the challenges they face. His attempts to emulate Trump's style, while potentially appealing to some, may risk alienating others, underscoring the delicate balance required in today's political landscape.
