The discovery of an envelope containing a suspicious "white powder" prompted the evacuation of New York City's 26 Federal Plaza on Thursday.
This building, which accommodates the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), was cleared as a precautionary measure, officials confirmed.
The Jacob K. Javits Federal Office Building, situated in Manhattan's Foley Square, is home to several government agencies. It has recently been in the spotlight due to ICE agents swiftly apprehending illegal migrants post-immigration hearings.
According to the Daily Caller, DHS confirmed the evacuation following the discovery of an unidentified substance, emphasizing that there was "no indication of danger" to the public as of Thursday evening.
"ICE is currently responding to an ongoing emergency at 26 Federal Plaza," DHS stated. "An unknown substance was found in one of the ICE offices. Out of an abundance of caution, the federal building was evacuated due to a potential threat to the safety of those inside. Some individuals are sheltering in place as part of established safety protocols."
The department further advised, "At this time, there are no indications of danger to the public. We strongly encourage the public to avoid the area to allow emergency responders to address the situation."
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also acknowledged the potential threat, assuring the public via social media that no injuries had been reported.
"New Yorkers, I have been preliminarily briefed on the matter unfolding at 26 Federal Plaza where envelopes containing white powder were discovered. I want to also reassure you that there are no known injuries at this time," Adams communicated. He added that while awaiting test results from federal partners, the FDNY Hazmat teams were actively working to secure the area.
FOX 5 reported that the envelopes were located on the ninth floor of the building, where ICE offices are situated. During a press conference on Thursday evening, New York City Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry mentioned that officials are still awaiting the test results to determine the contents of the envelope.
The incident remains under investigation by the FBI, with no arrests made thus far. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by federal agencies in maintaining security and safety in a city as bustling as New York.
The swift response by emergency teams highlights the importance of preparedness in addressing potential threats, ensuring the safety of both government employees and the public.
