Sherrod Brown, a former Democratic senator from Ohio, is gearing up for another Senate bid in 2026 after his defeat by Republican Bernie Moreno in the previous election.
Brown, who first took office in 2007, lost to Moreno by a significant margin of over 200,000 votes, despite the Democratic Party investing a hefty $194 million into his campaign. As reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Brown has informed Ohio labor leaders of his intention to run again, setting the stage for a potential showdown with Senator Jon Husted.
According to Breitbart, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has already thrown its support behind Husted, who was appointed by Governor Mike DeWine to fill the Senate seat vacated by JD Vance when he assumed the vice presidency. The NRSC's memo praised Husted as a "proven conservative" who embodies the current values of Ohio.
The memo also highlighted Husted's political track record, noting that he has "never lost a statewide race" and was among the first senators to receive an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
The NRSC's memo further emphasized Husted's robust campaign efforts, citing his impressive fundraising of $2.9 million in the second quarter of 2025 and his strategic expansion for a national presence. In contrast, the committee portrayed Brown's return to the political arena as a desperate move by the Democrats, suggesting that he faces a formidable challenge against Husted, who benefits from strong name recognition and the backing of both President Trump and Governor DeWine.
A survey conducted by Bowling Green University in April revealed that Husted held a narrow lead over Brown, with a 49-46 advantage. Notably, Husted enjoyed a six-point lead among independent voters, a critical demographic in Ohio's political landscape.
President Trump has already endorsed Husted, describing him as "a wonderful man" and commending his performance as a senator for Ohio.
As Ohio continues to lean more conservative, the NRSC concluded that Brown's legacy might be cemented as a "two-time loser," with Husted well-positioned to secure another victory.
The upcoming election promises to be a significant test of Ohio's shifting political dynamics, with Husted poised to capitalize on the state's growing conservative momentum.
