Indie rock bands are uniting in support of Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist who emerged victorious over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York City's mayoral race this past June.
This burgeoning alliance between the indie music scene and Mamdani's campaign is set to manifest in a series of rallies featuring performances by artists such as Wild Pink, Christian Lee Hutson, Palehound, Katy Kirby, Lowertown, and Gift, among others.
According to Stereogum, these rallies, branded as "Indie Rockers For A Better New York," are scheduled to take place at various venues across New York City in late August and early September. The events, slated for August 24 and 25, and September 1 and 3, will be hosted in Brooklyn and Manhattan. They aim to engage the public not only through music but also by offering voter registration and volunteer opportunities.
The concerts will double as benefit events, with proceeds directed towards Mamdani's support PAC, New Yorkers For Lower Costs, the pro-illegal migrant organization NYC Migrant Solidarity, and the Sameer Project, a non-profit dedicated to aiding individuals in Gaza.
As reported by Breitbart News, Mamdani's campaign has drawn criticism for its apparent contradiction. Despite his previous stance as a "defund the police" advocate, he is currently allocating substantial funds for a private security detail during his mayoral campaign.
This inconsistency was further highlighted when Mamdani faced backlash on social media for expressing gratitude to "first responders" following a tragic mass shooting in Manhattan, despite his earlier calls to "dismantle" the NYPD and reduce police funding.
