The Trump administration has announced a significant collaboration with the state of Indiana aimed at intensifying efforts to detain criminal illegal migrants.
This initiative involves the Indiana Department of Corrections working alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to increase detention capacity by 1,000 beds. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed this development through a press release, highlighting the establishment of the "Speedway Slammer" at the Miami Correctional Center in Bunker Hill, Indiana.
This marks the second such collaboration between a state and federal immigration authorities.
According to Conservative Daily News, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer. Today, were announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds. She extended gratitude to Governor Mike Braun for his cooperation, emphasizing the initiative's role in removing "the worst of the worst" from the country.
Noem further warned, If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indianas Speedway Slammer, urging illegal migrants to self-deport using the CBP Home App.
The moniker "Speedway Slammer" is a nod to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a renowned racing venue in Speedway, Indiana. This partnership is attributed to the enactment of the Big Beautiful Bill, which has "fully funded" the 287(g) program.
This program empowers local law enforcement with immigration authority and allocates taxpayer funds for 80,000 new detention beds, which ICE can utilize to detain and deport illegal migrants. The expansion is specifically targeted at detaining the most dangerous illegal migrants.
Governor Mike Braun expressed pride in collaborating with President Trump and Secretary Noem, stating, We are proud to work with President Trump and Secretary Noem as they remove the worst of the worst with this innovative partnership.
He emphasized Indiana's commitment to a comprehensive and cooperative strategy in addressing illegal immigration, positioning the state as a leader in such efforts.
The Speedway Slammer represents the latest in a series of agreements between Indiana and federal immigration authorities. Governor Braun recently announced a 287(g) partnership between the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and ICE, which aims to "enhance collaboration" with state and local law enforcement to remove criminal migrants. Similar agreements have been established with the Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Correction.
This initiative follows the opening of Alligator Alcatraz, another migrant detention center located in the Everglades, Florida. This facility, which repurposes a nearly abandoned airfield, is projected to cost approximately $450 million annually and will accommodate 5,000 beds for illegal migrants and other foreign nationals under federal immigration detention.
These developments underscore a broader strategy to bolster immigration enforcement and detention capabilities across the United States.
