President Donald Trump has taken decisive action against drug cartels, directing U.S. military forces to engage these criminal organizations, as reported by The New York Times.
This move marks a significant escalation in the administration's efforts to combat the influx of illegal drugs into the United States.
According to the Daily Caller, the President has clandestinely signed an order that designates these cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. This classification paves the way for military intervention, with Pentagon officials currently devising strategies to tackle the Latin American networks responsible for the drug crisis.
"President Trumps top priority is protecting the homeland, which is why he took the bold step to designate several cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations," stated White House spokesperson Anna Kelly to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The timing of Trump's policy implementation remains uncertain, as noted by The New York Times. The order potentially sets a precedent for direct military engagement against cartels, either on foreign territory or international waters. However, this approach may encounter legal challenges due to its unprecedented nature.
In his broader strategy to address immigration and border security, Trump has already deployed thousands of troops to fortify the Southern border, as reported by Military.com. The Pentagon, in June, acknowledged reviewing a Department of Homeland Security request for up to 20,000 troops.
Additionally, Trump successfully negotiated with Mexico to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to curb illegal immigration, in exchange for a temporary suspension of tariffs.
