Former President Barack Obama has recently come under fire for his criticism of the Texas GOP's redistricting plan, which he labeled as a "power grab" that threatens the democratic process.
This critique, however, has been met with accusations of hypocrisy, as Obama himself has been linked to a previous initiative that allegedly aimed to aid Democrats in their own gerrymandering efforts.
According to RedState, the Texas Democrats have taken drastic measures to prevent the passage of the proposed congressional maps, including leaving the state to deny Republicans the necessary quorum. Obama's public support for these actions has not gone unnoticed.
"We cant lose focus on what matters right now, Republicans in Texas are trying to gerrymander district lines to unfairly win five seats in next years midterm elections," he stated. "This is a power grab that undermines our democracy."
However, critics argue that Obama's stance is a glaring display of hypocrisy, given his past involvement with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) and its affiliate campaign, All On The Line. In 2019, these organizations collaborated with Obama to launch "Redistricting U," a program aimed at preparing for the 2021 redistricting process. "We need to build this movement from the ground upright now," Obama declared at the time.
Despite the former President's insistence on the importance of fair maps, skeptics have questioned the true intentions behind "Redistricting U." Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) suggested that the initiative was less about opposing partisan-based congressional districting and more about favoring the Democratic party. He highlighted a 2017 IRS tax exemption form in which the NDRC outlined their mission to "Favorably position Democrats for the redistricting process."
Fox News reported that "Redistricting U" was primarily focused on influencing the redrawing of congressional districts following the 2020 census data collection. Interestingly, one of the redistricting processes that garnered Obama's attention in 2021 was in Illinois, the state that played a significant role in his political career.
In October 2021, Illinois Democrats, who had full control over the redistricting process, proposed a congressional map that aimed to secure 14 of the state's 17 House seats for Democrats. This move was met with strong opposition from Republicans, who labeled it as a "shameless gerrymander." An even more aggressive alternative map, proposed by Democratic operatives, could potentially limit Republicans to just two seats.
All On The Line supported these efforts by mobilizing activists trained through "Redistricting U" to advocate for maps that favored Democratic-leaning districts. The final map for Illinois, however, was given an "F" grade by the Princeton Gerrymandering Project due to its partisan bias, indicating a "significant Democratic advantage."
The controversy surrounding Obama's criticism of the Texas GOP's redistricting plan and his past involvement in similar initiatives raises questions about the true nature of these efforts. Are they genuinely aimed at promoting fair representation, or are they merely tactics to secure political advantage?
As the debate continues, it is clear that the issue of gerrymandering remains a contentious topic in American politics.
