Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has taken a firm stance against Democrat lawmakers who have absconded from their duties, declaring his intention to file for the vacation of their seats should they fail to return by the week's end.
Paxton emphasized that such an act of breaking quorum is tantamount to abandoning one's office.
In a statement shared on X, Paxton asserted, "I will seek judicial orders declaring that runaway Democrats who fail to appear by the Speakers deadline have vacated their office." He further criticized the absent lawmakers, stating, "The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you dont show up to work, you get fired."
According to Gateway Pundit, Texas State House Speaker Dustin Burrows has imposed a Friday deadline for the absent Democrats to return and fulfill their legislative responsibilities. This move aligns with Paxton's earlier commitment to ensuring that these lawmakers face the legal consequences of their actions.
The situation has garnered attention from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who, as reported by Gateway Pundit, has also threatened to remove Democrat lawmakers from office. These lawmakers fled to Illinois and other states in an attempt to obstruct GOP efforts in Congressional redistricting.
Governor Abbott criticized the Democrats' actions, stating, "Democrats hatched a deliberate plan not to show up for work, for the specific purpose of abdicating the duties of their office and thwarting the chambers business. That amounts to an abandonment or forfeiture of an elected state office."
The unfolding events highlight the ongoing tension between Texas Republicans and Democrats, with the latter's absence seen as a deliberate strategy to impede legislative progress. As the deadline approaches, the question remains whether these lawmakers will return to fulfill their obligations or face the potential consequences outlined by state leaders.
