In a recent conversation with LI News Radio, New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed concern over the dwindling numbers within the New York Police Department (NYPD).
She attributed this decline to a growing reluctance among individuals to pursue careers in law enforcement, a trend she believes is fueled by the negative rhetoric directed at police officers in recent years. "Our forces are down.
Sometimes, recruitment is hard," Hochul remarked, highlighting the challenges faced not only by the NYPD but also by corrections officers and state police. She emphasized the need to "restore the nobility associated with careers in law enforcement" to attract young talent.
As reported by Breitbart, Hochul underscored her personal connection to law enforcement, noting, "My husband was a federal prosecutor working with police for 30 years and my sons a prosecutor, and so, we are a strong law enforcement family and support them."
She stressed the importance of community support for police officers, asserting that the NYPD is unparalleled in its excellence and requires additional reinforcements. In response to a surge in subway crimes last year, Hochul took the unprecedented step of allocating state funds to cover NYPD overtime costs for overnight train patrols, demonstrating her commitment to bolstering the force.
During the interview, Hochul also addressed the upcoming New York mayoral race, stating that she has yet to decide on an endorsement. However, she made it clear that she would not support any candidate advocating for the defunding of the police.
Instead, she expressed a desire to see concrete plans aimed at increasing the ranks of the NYPD. This stance reflects a broader conservative perspective that prioritizes law and order, emphasizing the need for a robust police presence to ensure public safety.
Governor Hochul's remarks come at a time when law enforcement agencies across the nation are grappling with recruitment challenges. Her call to action highlights the necessity of fostering a supportive environment for police officers, both from the community and within the political sphere.
As the debate over policing continues, the focus remains on finding effective solutions to strengthen and sustain law enforcement agencies, ensuring they are equipped to serve and protect the public effectively.
