California Dems Dread Harris' Gubernatorial Run: 'She's Got Baggage!'

As Kamala Harris contemplates a potential gubernatorial run in California for 2026, a wave of concern is sweeping through the ranks of state Democrats.

The apprehension stems from the belief that Harris, the former vice President, carries significant "baggage" that could potentially hinder the party's prospects and invigorate Republican opposition.

"Theres no groundswell for [Harriss] candidacy," a California House Democrat confided to CNN, speaking anonymously. "In fact, I think it would only fire up Republicans and hurt our ability to win the four to five seats that we need to win to win the House and hold on to three seats that we just flipped in 2024." The sentiment that Harris "comes in with baggage" is echoed by others within the party.

According to The Washington Free Beacon, some Democrats in California are voicing their frustration over Harris's apparent focus on a 2028 presidential campaign rather than prioritizing leadership within the state.

Representative Jimmy Gomez of California remarked, "Once you're the Vice President of the United States, there's only one place to goit's President. For me, if I was Vice President and all of a sudden I lose, it would be a fallback to me. I hate to put it so bluntly." This perspective underscores the perception that Harris views the governorship as a mere stepping stone rather than a dedicated commitment to California.

Moreover, prominent Democratic donors and leaders of interest groups are reportedly pressing Harris to address the shortcomings of her unsuccessful presidential bid. Harris assumed the Democratic nomination from then-president Joe Biden, only to be defeated by President Donald Trump, failing to secure any swing states in the process.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, when asked about Harris's potential gubernatorial ambitions, diplomatically stated, "I want her to do whatever she wants to do."

This is not the first instance of California Democrats publicly expressing skepticism about Harris. She has indicated that a decision regarding her gubernatorial aspirations will be made by late summer.

A California Democrat, who contributed significantly to her presidential campaign, candidly told Politico, "Kamala just reminds you we are in this complete shit storm," suggesting that another Harris candidacy would evoke memories of the "traumatizing" 2024 election.

In May, during the California Democratic Party convention, delegates openly expressed concerns that Harris might view California as a fallback option. State party delegate Madison Zimmerman emphasized, "We haven't really heard from her on California issues since Trump's inauguration," adding that "California isn't a consolation prize."

As the 2026 elections approach, the question remains whether Harris can effectively address these concerns and rally support within her party.
