Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has announced ongoing discussions with five states to establish migrant detention centers modeled after the controversial Alligator Alcatraz facility.
This initiative follows the successful collaboration between Florida and the federal government in repurposing the Miami-Dade Collier Training Facility, located in the Florida Everglades, into a center designed to process, house, and deport criminal migrants.
As reported by Breitbart, Secretary Noem refrained from naming the states involved in these discussions. However, she emphasized that the interest stems from the effective partnership seen in Florida.
"Weve had several other states that are actually using Alligator Alcatraz as a model for how they can partner with us," she stated over the weekend. The facility, despite facing criticism from left-leaning and mainstream media outlets, has been praised for its comprehensive amenities and robust infrastructure.
Alligator Alcatraz, which has become a template for other states, boasts 158,000 square feet of housing, continuous air conditioning, a round-the-clock medical facility and pharmacy, access to both indoor and outdoor recreational areas, and support services for legal and clergy needs.
The facility's construction includes an aluminum frame structure capable of withstanding winds up to 110 miles per hour, equivalent to a high-end Category 2 hurricane, as noted by Kevin Guthrie, head of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Guthrie also highlighted the presence of backup generators and a staff village with a capacity for 1,000 personnel.
Governor Ron DeSantis, along with other officials, has reiterated that illegal migrants are not compelled to remain at facilities like Alligator Alcatraz if they opt for self-deportation. "So right when you do the intake, they have the information about voluntary departure. They have the ability, obviously, you guys are funding that, because its a lot cheaper to do it that way," DeSantis remarked during a tour of the facility with President Donald Trump and other dignitaries. He further explained, "So, even if they get brought to the front doorstep here, they still have an opportunity to just go back voluntarily."
The facility has been specifically designated for housing some of the most dangerous migrants. Fox News obtained a list of individuals detained at the center, which includes an MS-13 gang member known as "Satan" and a Cuban migrant accused of a violent crime in Key Largo, Florida. This focus on detaining high-risk individuals aligns with conservative priorities of ensuring public safety and upholding the rule of law.
As the dialogue continues with other states, the Alligator Alcatraz model represents a significant shift in how migrant detention is approached, emphasizing security and efficiency while offering migrants the option of voluntary departure.
This initiative underscores a commitment to addressing illegal immigration through state and federal cooperation, reflecting a broader conservative agenda focused on law enforcement and border security.
