The CEO of National Public Radio (NPR), Katherine Maher, found herself in hot water after requesting examples of bias within her organization.
This comes in the wake of a $9.4 billion rescissions package, which includes the cessation of taxpayer funding for NPR and PBS, having passed the House and now awaiting Senate approval.
Maher, during her appearance on CNN, attempted to justify the continued partial funding of NPR and PBS from the Treasury, despite the current era of streaming and abundant media outlets. Republicans, however, have justifiably branded both organizations as liberal propagandists.
In response to accusations of bias, Maher confidently challenged critics, stating, "Please show me a story that concerns you." The conservative account Libs of TikTok responded with some startling examples, including headlines such as "Kamala Harris already faces racism and sexism from Trump and Republicans," "There Is No Neutral: Nice White People Can Still Be Complicit In A Racist Society," and "How racism became a marketing tool for country music."
As reported by the Western Journal, Libs of TikTok also quoted NPR's managing editor Terence Samuel explaining the organization's decision not to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story before the 2020 election. Samuel stated, "We dont want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we dont want to waste the listeners and readers time on stories that are just pure distractions."
This dismissive response raises questions about the potential compromise of the Biden family, including Joe Biden himself, through millions of dollars in questionable business deals involving China, Ukraine, and Russia. If the roles were reversed, and it was one of Donald Trumps sons involved, it is almost certain that NPR would have provided extensive coverage.
Evidence of this bias is seen in NPR's exhaustive reporting of every development in the Mueller probe, often casting Donald Trump in a negative light. For instance, a 2017 NPR story was headlined, "Journalist Investigating Trump and Russia Says, Full Picture Is One Of Collusion.'"
Former NPR editor Uri Berliner confessed in The Free Press last year, "Persistent rumors that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia over the election became the catnip that drove reporting. At NPR, we hitched our wagon to Trumps most visible antagonist, Representative Adam Schiff." However, when the Mueller report found no credible evidence of collusion, NPR's coverage was notably sparse.
GOP Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana also responded to Maher's call for evidence of bias within her organization. He cited headlines such as "As US Confronts Russia, Trumps Admiration of Putin Is Consistent," and "After Bidens Debate Performance, the Presidential Race Is Unchanged," which referenced a poll commissioned by NPR showing the race statistically tied, despite Biden's poor debate performance against Trump in late June 2024.
Further evidence of NPR's liberal bias was seen in its coverage of trans issues, illegal immigration, and even the Declaration of Independence. Despite the overwhelming evidence presented, Maher seems either unaware or unwilling to acknowledge her organization's biases.
The likelihood of NPR reforming seems slim, but it is high time that American taxpayers cease subsidizing its liberal propaganda. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of unbiased reporting and the need for media outlets to uphold journalistic standards, rather than serving as mouthpieces for a particular political ideology.
