In a recent development, Mike Pence, the former Vice President, expressed his gratitude to House Speaker Mike Johnson through a letter, acknowledging the inclusion of provisions aimed at defunding Planned Parenthood in the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB).
Pence, a staunch advocate against abortion, has consistently opposed abortion pills and procedures for non-viable pregnancies, and has been vocal in urging Republicans to endorse a nationwide 15-week abortion ban. The anti-abortion measures within the bill were lauded by Pence as a "generational victory for life," as revealed in a letter exclusively obtained by the Daily Caller.
According to the Daily Caller, the OBBB, passed on July 4, effectively halts Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood for a year. This legislation restricts Medicaid payments to any nonprofit organization that provides abortions, with limited exceptions. Planned Parenthood, which operates nearly 600 clinics across the nation, is directly impacted by this measure. Pence's letter to Johnson emphasized the historical significance of this achievement, stating, "With this legislation, you carry forward the hopes, prayers, and toils of the Pro-Life Movement."
The former Vice President also reflected on the efforts of past pro-life advocates, writing, "Apart from that great cloud of witnesses and the long labor of half of a century, we would not be celebrating this major accomplishment today." This sentiment underscores the long-standing dedication of the pro-life movement to curtail abortion services in the United States.
Planned Parenthood's 2024 annual report documented 402,200 abortions, with government programs contributing to over a third of its revenue. This funding stream is now set to be interrupted, at least until the following summer. Pence reminded Johnson of his own history in this legislative battle, noting his role as "the original author of legislation to defund Planned Parenthood nearly 20 years ago," referencing his 2007 Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act.
Pence concluded his letter by expressing his eagerness to collaborate with Johnson in defending this legislative milestone. "Our team at Advancing American Freedom looks forward to working with you to defend this milestone victory on the campaign trail as we work to make permanent the defunding of Planned Parenthood," he wrote.
"God Bless you, Mr. Speaker!"
