Republican Representative Byron Donalds of Florida recently highlighted the state's innovative approach to addressing the border crisis, which he believes could serve as a model for other states.
During an appearance on Fox News' "Jesse Watters Primetime," Donalds elaborated on Florida's establishment of the "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center. This facility is designed to accommodate up to 5,000 criminal illegal immigrants awaiting deportation, marking a significant step in the state's immigration strategy.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Donalds credited the swift establishment of the detention center to the collaboration between Homeland Security and Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. "So in Florida, when you have Homeland Security working with Governor DeSantis and their team to say lets get some additional bedspace in Florida," Donalds stated. "Can you stand this up, and can we do this? One, they were able to get that done very, very quickly. Thats to the credit of the governor and his team. But its also a blueprint for other states."
Donalds suggested that other states, such as Louisiana, could emulate Florida's strategy by partnering with Homeland Security to expand bedspace and infrastructure. This would better equip them to manage illegal immigration challenges. "Whether its Louisiana or any other state, you can do that too. Lets get the bedspace that Homeland needs so that when we pass one big, beautiful bill, they get all of the money and the resources they need in order to create the logistical framework of deporting criminally illegal aliens and a lot of these aliens that Joe Biden let in over the last four years," he remarked.
In his discussion, Donalds also praised President Donald Trump for his leadership in securing the border. "Its really miraculous. Of course, this is the president first. He has led on this. He campaigned on what he was going to do, closing the border towns. Also, the team at the White House. Hes put together a great team," Donalds noted. "Everybody is focused on the mission. The entire cabinet is there, and the party stands behind them."
In May, President Trump announced his intention to revive and expand Alcatraz, one of America's most infamous prisons, to house the nation's "most ruthless and violent offenders." This proposal aligns with Florida's recent initiatives, as Attorney General James Uthmeier suggested converting an abandoned airport into the "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center.
President Trump visited Florida to inspect the new facility and expressed support for Governor DeSantis's proposal to appoint National Guardsmen as immigration judges, aiming to expedite the court process at the detention center.
Florida's proactive measures in dealing with illegal immigration underscore a commitment to upholding law and order, reflecting a broader conservative agenda that prioritizes national security and the rule of law. As states grapple with the complexities of immigration, Florida's approach may offer valuable insights for those seeking effective solutions.
