In a recent development, President Trump has once again hinted at the possibility of withholding federal funds from New York City, should Zohran Mamdani, whom he labels a "communist," be elected as mayor.
The President expressed his views on the matter while preparing for his journey to Alligator Alcatraz in Florida on Tuesday morning.
According to RedState, Trump voiced his disapproval of Mamdani, stating, "I think he's terrible. He's a communist. The last thing we need is a communist." He further added, "I said, 'There will never be socialism in the United States,' now we have a communist."
This statement comes in the wake of an increasing shift towards the left in the Democratic Party, with the election of Squad socialists to Congress and now, potentially, a self-proclaimed communist as the mayor of New York City.
President Trump, however, seems to be undeterred by this development. He stated, "I think hes bad news, and I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with him, watching him." He further added, "Because he has to come right through this building to get his money. And don't worry, he's not going to run away with anything." The President also referred to Mamdani as a "total nut job," expressing his disbelief at the possibility of New Yorkers electing him as their mayor.
Mamdani's political stance has been a topic of controversy, with RedState reporter Bonchie highlighting a clip where Mamdani expresses his desire to "seize the means of production," a fundamental aspect of communism. Mamdani's plans also include the establishment of government-run grocery stores, the seizure of housing, the creation of government communes, and a higher tax rate for "whiter neighborhoods," a proposal that has been criticized as racially biased.
In the face of these radical proposals, President Trump has already suggested that he would withhold federal funding from New York City once Mamdani takes office. In an exclusive interview on "Sunday Morning Futures" with Maria Bartiromo, Trump stated, Lets say this, if he does get in, Im going to be president and hes going to have to do the right thing, or theyre not getting any money. He further warned, I can tell you this, whoevers mayor of New York is going to have to behave themselves, or the federal government is coming down very tough on them financially."
Mamdani's rise to prominence has been swift, with his victory over former New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for mayor causing a stir in the political world. His party has since rallied around his extremist views, expressing support and admiration for the candidate.
However, this shift towards radicalism could be a strategic misstep for the Democratic Party, as such extreme ideas were soundly rejected in the 2024 elections. President Trump, a staunch advocate of traditional values and limited government, would likely welcome the opportunity to face off against such a radical opponent.
