Dr. Phil McGraw has taken a firm stance against Democrat Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, criticizing her for what he perceives as anti-American rhetoric.
The well-known television personality expressed his disapproval of Omar's comments during a recent appearance on "The Real Story," where he argued that Omar should exhibit greater gratitude toward the United States, a nation that provided her refuge after she fled the turmoil of Somalia.
According to the Daily Caller, Omar had previously stated in a June 13 interview on "Democracy Now!" that the United States was becoming "one of the worst countries," a sentiment she expressed in response to the Army's 250th anniversary parade on June 14. Dr. Phil, in his critique, highlighted Omar's journey from a Kenyan refugee camp to U.S. citizenship, emphasizing the opportunities and freedoms she has enjoyed since resettling in America.
"You cant make this up. Who are we talking about here? Omar fled Somalia a failed state, a country ravaged by civil war, corruption and poverty and she spent years in a Kenyan refugee camp," Dr. Phil remarked. He continued, "I hate that for her. I really do. She resettled in the U.S. as a refugee so happy for her. She was given housing, afforded education, opportunity, freedom. She became a citizen in 2000 at 17. Again, so happy for her. Thank God she escaped that terrible life."
Dr. Phil further underscored the irony of Omar's election to Congress, describing it as the realization of the American Dream. He expressed his disappointment that, in his view, Omar spends her time criticizing the very nation that offered her and her family a new beginning.
"And she was elected to Congress, one of the first Muslim women in the House. The American Dream," he said. "She has every reason to be thankful. Is she? Not even almost! Instead, she spends her time bashing the very country that saved her and her family."
In addition to his critique of Omar's recent remarks, Dr. Phil took issue with her past statements, including a June 2021 tweet where she equated the U.S. and Israel with the Taliban and Hamas. "We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban," Omar had written. Dr. Phil dismissed this comparison as "crazy talk," questioning the logic behind including America in such a list.
He also referenced Omar's controversial description of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as "some people did something" during a 2019 speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). "Really? Some people did something? Way to stand up for your country," Dr. Phil commented.
While Dr. Phil acknowledged Omar's right to express her views, he did not shy away from labeling her rhetoric as "disgusting." He asserted, "She has the right to say what shes saying. Culturally, psychologically, I think its disgusting. But does she have the right to say it? Yeah, she does just like I have the right to say its absolutely disgusting!"
His remarks reflect a broader conservative perspective that values patriotism and gratitude toward the opportunities afforded by the United States.
