In a tragic incident that has left a community in mourning, authorities have identified the individual responsible for the fatal ambush of two firefighters in the remote Idaho wilderness near Coeur DAlene.
The suspect, 20-year-old Wess Roley, is believed to have orchestrated the attack by setting a fire to lure the firefighters into a deadly trap. Despite identifying Roley, law enforcement remains puzzled about his motives for the attack, which also left a third firefighter injured.
Sheriff Bob Norris of Kootenai County revealed that there was some form of interaction between Roley and the firefighters prior to the ambush. "There was an interaction with the firefighters," Norris stated. "It had something to do with his vehicle being parked where it was." As reported by Western Journal, the sheriff indicated that Roleys body was discovered on Sunday, with initial investigations suggesting he may have taken his own life.
However, authorities have not dismissed the possibility that he was killed during a prolonged exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. "It appears right now, we have a shotgun that was used, but were still processing the scene," Norris added.
The ambush has been described as a calculated attack, with Sheriff Norris emphasizing the element of surprise that left the firefighters defenseless. "This was a total ambush," he remarked, according to USA Today. "These firefighters did not have a chance."
Roley, who was known to be transient, had been residing in the area for most of 2024, living out of his vehicle. "We know he was a transient here. We know he lived here for the better part of 2024, but in terms of how he got here, why he chose this place, we dont know," Norris explained. The sheriff also noted that Roley had only minor interactions with law enforcement prior to the incident.
Interestingly, Roley had once aspired to join the ranks of firefighters, a fact that adds a layer of complexity to the case. "At one point, [Roley] wanted to be a firefighter," Norris said, pondering whether this ambition had any connection to the tragic events.
Roleys grandfather, Dale Roley, expressed disbelief over his grandson's actions, suggesting that "something must have snapped" for him to commit such an act. "He actually really respected law enforcement," Dale Roley shared. "He loved firefighters. It didnt make sense that he was shooting firefighters. Maybe he got rejected or something."
Dale Roley recounted his grandson's background, noting that he attended high school in Phoenix, Arizona, and had lived in Oklahoma before moving to Idaho to be closer to his father. "I know he had been in contact to get a job with a fire department," he said. "He wanted to be part of a team that he sort of idolized." The elder Roley expressed profound sorrow for the victims, stating, "I feel more sad for the people that got killed than I do for him because they didnt They didnt deserve it. It was just, they didnt go to war. This wasnt part of their job description."
The Roley family, through their attorney Justin Whittenton, issued a heartfelt statement acknowledging the gravity of the tragedy. "There are no words that can suffice for this tragedy and the infinite losses suffered by those affected by this shooting," the statement read. "We do not understand why this happened or how this came about." The community continues to grapple with the senseless loss, as questions linger about the circumstances that led to this devastating event.
