In a significant political development, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has thrown his support behind Zohran Mamdani, a fellow Democratic Socialist, in the race for New York City mayor.
This endorsement comes just a week before the Democratic primary, signaling a push for progressive change in the city's leadership.
Sanders, known for his staunch advocacy for the working class, expressed his reasons for backing Mamdani in a social media post. "At this dangerous moment in history, status quo politics isnt good enough," he stated. "We need new leadership that is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests & fight for the working class. Zohran Mamdani is providing that vision. He is the best choice for NYC mayor."
As reported by Breitbart, Sanders' endorsement aligns with that of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, another prominent figure in the socialist movement. Mamdani, a 33-year-old assemblyman, is seen as a formidable opponent to Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York.
Sanders further elaborated on the stakes of the upcoming election, emphasizing the need for a grassroots movement. "Our nation faces a fundamental choice: Will we continue with a corporate-dominated politics driven by billionaires or will we build a grass-roots movement fueled by everyday people, committed to fighting oligarchy, authoritarianism and kleptocracy?" he remarked, according to the New York Times. This sentiment echoes the broader progressive agenda that seeks to challenge entrenched political and economic power structures.
Ocasio-Cortez has been vocal in her criticism of Cuomo, labeling him part of the political "gerontocracy" and arguing that his election as mayor would be "unconscionable" given his resignation from the governorship in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, which Cuomo has denied. Mamdani, in response to Sanders' endorsement, expressed deep admiration for the senator, calling him "the single most influential political figure in my life."
Mamdani's campaign is positioning itself as a battle against oligarchy, with Mamdani stating, "Make no mistake: Oligarchy is on the ballot. Andrew Cuomo is the candidate of a billionaire class that is suffocating our democracy and forcing the working class out of our city." Meanwhile, a pro-Cuomo super PAC has been actively running ads portraying Mamdani as excessively "radical" for the mayoral position, as noted by the Times.
Despite these attacks, Cuomo maintains a lead in the polls ahead of the June 24 Democratic primary. His campaign has secured endorsements from numerous elected officials and major unions, and recently garnered support from key Orthodox Jewish groups.
This dynamic race underscores the ongoing ideological battle within the Democratic Party, as candidates vie to define the future direction of New York City.
