The recent ascension of Pope Leo XIV to the papacy has sparked a flurry of speculation and debate.
Many are questioning whether he will follow in the reformist footsteps of Pope Francis or adhere more closely to the traditionalist approach of Francis' predecessors. The answer, it seems, is not as straightforward as some might hope.
According to The Blaze, those who perceive Pope Leo XIV as a mere replica of Pope Francis are mistaken. The new pontiff is not an ideologue, and it is erroneous to label him as such. The discourse surrounding his papacy has been polarized, with some prematurely celebrating him as a "woke" pope, while others lament the same. Both factions, however, are misguided.
The left, in its relentless pursuit of power, has proven adept at manipulating public perception. An article published on Alternet lauded Pope Leo XIV as a "woke" pope, based on his criticism of Vice President JD Vance's assertion that love should begin with one's family before extending to others. This interpretation is a gross oversimplification of the pontiff's stance. Theological disputes are a common occurrence within religious circles, and one disagreement does not a "woke" pope make.
On the other end of the spectrum, right-wing commentator Laura Loomer has branded Pope Leo XIV as a "woke" Marxist. This label is a reflection of her lack of understanding rather than the pope's ideological leanings.
The Nation, a left-wing publication, has also thrown its support behind Pope Leo XIV, seeing in him a reflection of Pope Leo XIII's principles. However, their assertion that Pope Leo XIII was a social justice warrior in the left-wing tradition is misguided. They praise him for his "sharp critiques of capitalism," yet a closer reading of his 1891 encyclical "Rerum Novarum" would reveal a more nuanced perspective.
Pope Leo XIII, writing eight years after Marx's death, foresaw the devastation that Marx's ideology would wreak. He warned of the "ideal equality" that Marxists dream of, predicting it would lead to widespread misery and degradation. He also advocated for private property, a stance that is antithetical to socialism.
Pope Leo XIV's stance on life issues will likely resonate with orthodox Catholics. He is staunchly pro-life, opposing abortion, euthanasia, and assisted suicide. He also supports traditional marriage and family structures. His criticism of the "homosexual lifestyle" and "alternative families" comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children is a welcome development for practicing Catholics.
On the issue of immigration, however, Pope Leo XIV leans more liberal. He has expressed opposition to President Trump's immigration policies and criticized the president of El Salvador for his crackdown on illegal immigration. His stance on this issue may require further clarification in the future.
As for his political affiliations, Pope Leo XIV has historically aligned with the Republican party, having voted Republican in the 2012, 2014, and 2016 elections. However, his abstention from the 2016 general election and decision to vote by absentee ballot in 2024 suggest a shift in his political leanings. He appears to be more of a Bush Republican than a Trump Republican, but he is certainly not a "woke" or "Marxist" activist.
While some progressives may be privately disappointed that Pope Leo XIV is not the second coming of Pope Francis, their public silence is strategic. The left's primary objective is power, and they are adept at deception in its pursuit.
For practicing Catholics, Pope Leo XIV appears to be a figure they can rally behind. His commitment to traditional values and his opposition to progressive ideologies align with their beliefs, offering a beacon of hope in an increasingly secular world.
