Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has issued a stern warning to the Trump administration, cautioning that further arrests of Democrats could lead to significant repercussions.
Her remarks came in an Instagram video shared on Sunday, following the recent detainment of three Democratic New Jersey House membersReps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIverduring their visit to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility. Ocasio-Cortez accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of engaging in "public intimidation."
"If anyones breaking the law in this situation, its not members of Congress, its the Department of Homeland Security," she asserted. "Its people like Tom Homan and Secretary Kristi Noem." She further emphasized, "You lay a finger on someone, on Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman or any of the representatives that were there, you lay a finger on them, we are going to have a problem. Because the people who are breaking the law are the people not abiding by it."
According to Breitbart, ICE officials have alleged that the Democratic officials, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, were involved in pushing and shoving amidst a crowd of protesters at the Delaney Hall detention center last week. The facility has become a focal point of contention in New Jersey, with Trump administration representatives asserting its necessity for detaining violent illegal immigrants. Nonetheless, Baraka and other local leaders have contended that the administration has failed to secure the necessary permits for housing migrants at the site.
Democratic officials have refuted these accusations. Rep. Watson Coleman (D-NJ) expressed her concerns on MSNBC, stating that Trump had "weaponized law enforcement." She remarked, "To take the mayor of the largest city in the state of New Jersey and put him in handcuffs and then take him away, and his mother, God bless her soul, in addition to his wife. His mother is here, and she has been here since they brought him here. This is not America. This is the sick mans idea of what he thinks he can do to any one of us, or all of us that he doesnt like."
The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and Democratic officials over immigration enforcement and the treatment of elected representatives. As the debate continues, questions remain about the balance between law enforcement and political expression, as well as the broader implications for civil liberties and governmental authority.
