In a recent incident that has sparked widespread condemnation, an antisemitic sign was displayed at a bar owned by Barstool Sports in Philadelphia.
The company's founder, Dave Portnoy, has been lauded by various figures, including actor Ben Stiller and Senator Dave McCormick, for his decisive response to the incident. Portnoy announced in a video that the individuals responsible for the offensive signage would be sent to Auschwitz, the infamous Nazi concentration camp in Poland, to learn about the Holocaust.
According to Fox News, Portnoy's decision to educate the culprits about the Holocaust, during which over 1.1 million Jews were systematically murdered, has been met with widespread approval. Senator McCormick praised Portnoy's swift action, stating, "Good on @stoolpresidente for not only immediately working to address the horrific display of hate displayed in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, last night but also using it as an opportunity to educate on the tragic history of anti-Jewish hatred and violence."
He further emphasized the need to confront antisemitism, stating, "We cant look the other way at antisemitism. It needs to be identified, called out, and crushed whenever it rears its ugly head."
Portnoy's initial reaction was one of intense anger, but he eventually decided to use the incident as a teaching moment. He stated, "These are young f---ing morons who did this. Theyre drunk. Do you really want to ruin somebodys life? And let me be honest, I dont know whats going on in the world Ive been doing Barstool for 20 years, Ive had more hate, more antisemitism in the last year, year and a half, than Ive ever had doing it."
He further explained, "And Im not talking politics or whats going on in the Middle East just hating groups of people. You hate my parents, you hate my grandparents s--- like that, its crazy. So, yeah, my initial reaction was Im going to burn these people to the ground, their families, everything. And its like, you know what? Maybe thats not the best course of action. Maybe I can use this as a teaching moment."
Portnoy's decision to turn this "hideous incident" into a learning opportunity has been met with approval from various quarters. He stated, "I talked to both the culprits who I know are super involved in it, talked to the families. Im sending these kids to Auschwitz. Theyve agreed to go. Thats, of course the Holocaust concentration camps. Been in touch with (New England Patriots team owner Robert Kraft) who run the anti-hate group. Were gonna send these kids to Auschwitz. Theyre gonna do a tour of the concentration camps (in Poland). Hopefully learn something. Maybe their lives arent ruined, and they think twice and, more importantly, other people see its not just words youre throwing around. To me, thats a fair outcome of this event."
In addition to this, Portnoy confirmed that two waitresses involved in the incident were dismissed. His initial reaction was one of intense anger, as he stated, "Ive been shaking. Ive been so f---ing mad for the last two hours. Im going to make it my lifes f---ing mission to ruin these people. Im coming to your throat, Im never ending."
This incident comes at a time when antisemitism is on the rise, particularly following the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks by Hamas on Jewish people in Israel.
