A musical comedy inspired by the alleged murderer Luigi Mangione is set to grace the stage in San Francisco this summer.
The production, titled "Luigi the Musical," is being promoted as a "story of love, murder, and hash browns," and is scheduled to open on June 4 at the Taylor Street Theater.
The narrative is centered around Mangione, who recently pleaded not guilty to federal murder charges in connection with the execution-style killing of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson. Prosecutors have made it clear that they will seek the death penalty if Mangione is found guilty.
As reported by KRON4, the musical is expected to feature other notorious figures who have recently found themselves behind bars. These include the accused sex trafficker Sean "Diddy" Combs and the convicted crypto-bundler Sam Bankman-Fried. The production company describes the show as a "wildly irreverent, razor-sharp comedy that imagines the true story of Luigi Mangione, the alleged corporate assassin turned accidental folk hero."
On December 4, Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, was shot and killed just before 7 a.m. local time outside the New York Hilton Midtown. Police have matched fingerprints found on a water bottle and a Kind bar near the crime scene to Mangione. Additionally, authorities have linked bullet shells to a 3D printed ghost gun found in Mangione's possession at the time of his arrest. Mangione was apprehended by local police five days after the shooting at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
"Luigi: the Musical" is directed by Nova Bradford and co-written with Caleb Zeringue. The production company describes the musical as "Bold, campy, and unafraid, Luigi: the Musical is both laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly thoughtful. If you like your comedy smart and your show tunes with a criminal record, Luigi is your new favorite felony."
In the wake of Mangione's arrest, several online fundraisers have sprung up in support of his legal defense. GoFundMe has removed at least three such fundraisers, citing its terms of service that prohibit raising money for the legal defense of violent crimes. However, GiveSendGo, an alternative crowdfunding platform, has seen its Mangione legal defense campaign raise over $720,000 as of Thursday.
The musical comedy based on Mangione's alleged crimes is a bold and controversial move. It is a testament to the power of art to provoke thought and conversation, even on the most sensitive of subjects.
As the curtains rise on June 4, audiences will be treated to a unique blend of comedy, crime, and show tunes, all wrapped up in the life story of an alleged murderer. Whether this will be seen as a daring artistic choice or a step too far remains to be seen. As the legal proceedings against Mangione continue, so too will the public's fascination with this complex and controversial figure.
