In a recent discussion, Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House, shared insights into President Donald Trump's evolving faith, which he attributes to two harrowing incidents during the 2024 campaign trail.
Gingrich contends that these experiences have profoundly deepened Trump's religious convictions, suggesting a divine purpose behind his political aspirations.
According to the Daily Caller, Trump faced two assassination attempts last year. The first occurred in July when a sniper targeted him in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the second took place in September while he was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida.
During an appearance on "Kudlow," Gingrich elaborated on how these events have influenced Trump's perspective. "I think thats true, but Id also point out when he really understood that it was providential that he moved his head at the only possible second to avoid being killed and then realized about a month later somebody else tried to kill him," Gingrich remarked. He further noted that Trump's sense of divine mission has been reinforced by these near-death experiences.
Gingrich drew parallels between Trump's transformation and that of historical figures like Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, both of whom survived assassination attempts and believed they were spared for a higher purpose. "He said this, sort of, in his inaugural address, that God had spared him for a purpose, and youll remember both President Reagan and Pope John Paul the Second had been shot, both thought and compared notes that they had been spared by God for a purpose," Gingrich stated. He emphasized that Trump now views his mission to "make America great again" as the reason for his survival.
Despite Gingrich's assertions, skepticism persists in some quarters. MSNBC hosts have previously questioned the gravity of the assassination attempts, even though one person died and two others were injured during the rally. Furthermore, a July Morning Consult poll revealed that a significant portion of Biden supporters, about one-third, entertained the notion that the assassination attempt might have been staged.
This narrative of divine intervention and providence aligns with a broader conservative perspective that values traditional beliefs and the notion of a higher calling. As Trump continues to frame his political journey as part of a divine plan, it remains to be seen how this will resonate with the American electorate and influence the political landscape.
