The Democratic Party has been embroiled in a series of controversies that have escalated since President Trump's inauguration.
These include allegations of supporting domestic terrorism against Tesla showrooms and charging stations, and seemingly endorsing violence against Trump and DOGE advisor Elon Musk. The most recent uproar revolves around the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an alleged MS-13 gang member and accused domestic abuser.
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) has been at the center of this controversy, having traveled to El Salvador to advocate for the release of the deported illegal immigrant, whom he refers to as a "constituent." Images of Van Hollen and Abrego Garcia, with margaritas in the backdrop, have caused an international stir and brought significant embarrassment to the Democratic Party.
According to RedState, four Democratic House members also journeyed to El Salvador on Monday to seek Abrego Garcia's release. However, Salvadoran officials promptly dismissed their efforts, stating that they were not in the country in an "official capacity." These representatives, Robert Garcia (CA), Maxwell Frost (FL), Yassamin Ansari (AZ), and Maxine Dexter (OR), have since returned from their trip and appeared on CNN, vowing to continue their fight for Abrego Garcia. This is despite El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele's firm stance against returning him and the Trump administration's clear message that Abrego Garcia will not be allowed back into the United States.
The actions of these Democratic representatives have earned them a new moniker from House Republicans: The Congressional MS-13 Caucus. This nickname comes in the wake of revelations that Senator Van Hollen was once a supporter of efforts to eradicate MS-13 gang members, a significant issue in Democratic strongholds like California and Maryland.
The Democratic Party's actions have raised eyebrows, with some suggesting that they are setting themselves up for defeat in the 2026 midterms. The party's stance on these issues, despite the negative public perception, is perplexing. This includes not only the margarita incident but also the direct criticism from Patty Morin, mother of the late Rachel Morin.
Rachel Morin, a mother of five, was brutally assaulted and murdered by another illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Victor Martinez-Hernandez, in the summer of 2023. This occurred after Martinez-Hernandez illegally crossed the border during the Biden-Harris administration.
Patty Morin expressed her disappointment with the Democratic Party in a recent interview, stating, "[Van Hollen] did not call our family. He did not give condolences. There was no action on the Democratic Party in any way, from Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Mayorkas, anyone here in Maryland. None of the senators did anything to help search for the murderer of my daughter."
Despite this, Democratic representatives continue to advocate for a suspected gang member and alleged domestic abuser. This paradoxical stance raises questions about the party's priorities and its understanding of public sentiment.
