David Hogg, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), has set his sights on challenging certain incumbent Democratic members of Congress in the 2026 primary elections.
Hogg, 25, is a co-founder of Leaders We Deserve, a political organization that recently declared its intention to invest $20 million to support the election of younger Democratic leaders. This includes those who are primed to challenge incumbent House Democrats.
According to the Daily Caller, the organization has not yet specified which incumbents it intends to challenge. However, it has indicated to the Washington Post that it will concentrate its efforts on members in reliably blue districts. The group has no plans to challenge Democrats who are facing difficult reelection battles against Republican opponents.
Hogg, who gained recognition as a co-founder of the gun control advocacy group March for Our Lives, expressed his concerns about the current Democratic leadership in a recent post. "Everyone in our party says they want to start winning again, and they dobut that simply will not be possible with our current set of leaders, too many of which are asleep at the wheel, out-of-touch, and ineffective," he wrote.
Hogg's rise to prominence came after he survived the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. He was elected as the DNCs vice chair in February and holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever to serve in this role.
Leaders We Deserve describes itself as a grassroots organization committed to electing young progressives to Congress and State Legislatures across the country. Their mission is to counter the far-right agenda and promote a progressive vision for the future.
When questioned about DNC Chair Ken Martin's stance on his plan, Hogg acknowledged that Martin "certainly has different views" on challenging Democratic incumbents. "There are disagreements in our party about the right way to approach this moment. There are certainly disagreements we have," Hogg admitted in an interview with Politico. He did, however, commend Martin for his efforts in building and reforming the party, despite their disagreements.
Hogg also criticized the culture of seniority politics within the party. "We have a culture of seniority politics that has created a litmus test of who deserves to be here," he told Politico. "We need people, regardless of their age, that are here to fight."
Hogg's decision comes at a time when the Democratic Party is reportedly struggling to effectively communicate a message that resonates with voters. This follows the party's significant losses in the 2024 election cycle and recent plummeting approval ratings.
In December, during an appearance on MSNBC Reports, Hogg claimed that he faced resistance for suggesting that Democrats needed to engage more with young men ahead of the November 2024 presidential election. "Throughout the campaign, there were multiple times where I brought up publicly my concerns about young voters, and I was shut down by consultants and messaged by them saying, You dont know what you are talking about. This is not an issue. This is dumb of you to say, and a whole lot of other things that I cant tell you on TV," Hogg revealed.
Neither the DNC nor Leaders We Deserve responded to the Daily Caller News Foundations request for comment. This leaves unanswered questions about the potential impact of Hogg's initiative on the future of the Democratic Party and its ability to resonate with voters.
