In a recent interview, Chris Columbus, the director of the iconic film "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," expressed his regret over including a cameo of President Donald Trump in the movie.
Columbus's remarks have sparked controversy, with critics arguing that his comments reflect an Orwellian desire to erase history.
"Years later, [Trumps cameo has] become this curse. Its become this thing that I wish it was not there," Columbus confessed to the San Francisco Chronicle, a publication known for its left-leaning stance. "But its there," he continued, "Its become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone."
Columbus further expressed his frustration, stating, "I cant cut it. If I cut it, Ill probably be sent out of the country. Ill be considered sort of not fit to live in the United States, so Ill have to go back to Italy or something."
According to Breitbart, Columbus's comments reflect a surprising change of heart. The director admitted that when the film was first screened in Chicago, the audience's reaction to Trump's cameo was overwhelmingly positive. "They cheered and they cheered and they thought it was hilarious. I think I know a lot about comedy, but I dont, obviously, because I never thought that was going to be considered hilarious," Columbus said.
In a previous interview in 2020, Columbus claimed that Trump had demanded a cameo in the film as a condition for allowing the crew to film in the Plaza Hotel, which he owned at the time. "We paid the fee, but [Trump] also said, The only way you can use the Plaza is if Im in the movie. So we agreed to put him in the movie," Columbus recalled.
However, Trump refuted this claim three years later on his Truth Social account. "30 years ago (how time flies!), Director Chris Columbus, and others, were begging me to make a cameo appearance in Home Alone 2," Trump wrote. "They rented the Plaza Hotel in New York, which I owned at the time. I was very busy and didnt want to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history!"
Trump further argued that his cameo had contributed significantly to the film's success. "That little cameo took off like a rocket, and the movie was a big success, and still is, especially around Christmas time," he added. "People call me whenever it is aired."
Trump also questioned Columbus's claims of feeling blackmailed. "If they felt bullied, or didnt want me, why did they put me in, and keep me there, for over 30 years?" Trump wondered. "Because I was, and still am, great for the movie, thats why!"
In response to Trump's comments, Columbus maintained his stance. "Whats going through this guys mind? He said I was lying. Im not lying. He said I begged him to be in the movie, but theres no world I would ever beg a non-actor to be in a movie. But we were desperate to get the Plaza Hotel."
Columbus's comments have raised eyebrows among conservative circles, particularly due to his previous remarks about feeling uncomfortable setting a scene in a Christian church for the first Home Alone movie.
