Jessica Tarlov, a Democratic strategist and co-host of "The Five," found herself in a heated exchange on Thursday's episode of the show.
The discussion centered around the impact of President Donald Trump's economic policies, particularly his decision to impose reciprocal tariffs on various countries, a move that had previously sent the stock market into turmoil.
While many Republicans have supported the President's approach, especially after he temporarily paused the tariffs for 90 days, excluding China, Tarlov contended that her Republican colleagues were viewing the situation from a "very privileged seat."
"You guys are talking about this from a very privileged seat," Tarlov asserted during the debate.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Judge Jeanine Pirro, one of Tarlov's co-hosts, countered her argument by emphasizing the importance of job creation in America's heartland. "Bringing jobs to middle America is not privileged," Pirro retorted. Tarlov attempted to bolster her argument by citing Microsoft's decision not to open a new data center in Ohio, attributing it to the tariffs. However, Jesse Watters, another co-host, dismissed her point, arguing it had "nothing to do" with the tariffs.
Tarlov continued to defend her stance by referencing the CHIPS and Science Act and the purported return of manufacturing jobs under Joe Biden's administration. "Walmart saying, We cant do our economic forecasting. You said, What do Democrats know about bringing back these jobs? Talk about the CHIPS and Science Act," she stated. Yet, Watters challenged her, asking, "What chips plant was built under Joe Biden? What chips plant, Jessica?"
Despite Biden's administration authorizing significant public subsidies through the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act, the anticipated surge in manufacturing jobs did not materialize.
By March 2024, the net creation of manufacturing jobs for that month stood at zero. Greg Gutfeld, another co-host, sarcastically interjected, "I think it was ice chips."
Tarlov also pointed out that "Joe Biden increased Trumps China tariffs by threefold," but Pirro noted a consensus on the necessity of tariffs against China, stating, "China needs to be tariffed because they cheat, they steal."
The conversation took a turn when Tarlov quipped, "Let them eat cake," likening the situation to Marie Antoinette's infamous phrase. Pirro, seemingly puzzled, asked, "Who? The Chinese? Who is Marie Antoinette?" The exchange concluded with Tarlov attempting to clarify her point amid the lively debate.
