During a recent town hall event hosted by CNN, Representative Jahana Hayes (D-CT) expressed regret over her previous support for the Laken Riley Act.

She initially believed that the Trump administration was committed to enhancing border security and collaborating with Democrats to advance immigration policy. However, she now questions that assumption, citing the administration's rhetoric and perceived attacks on immigrants. Hayes remarked, "Im not really sure of that, because Ive seen the rhetoric that has come out and the attacks that have been targeted towards immigrants."

According to Breitbart, Hayes explained her initial vote for the legislation was influenced by a specific provision aimed at penalizing those causing harm or death to police officers. She acknowledged, "I voted for that piece of legislation because of a very specific provision, and it was if it caused injury or death to a police officer, which was one small piece of it." Reflecting on her decision, she admitted, "As Ive thought about it, over the last couple of months, I probably would have voted differently. Its a vote that I regret." Hayes emphasized her cautious approach to future legislative decisions, given her concerns about the administration's stance on immigration.

Furthermore, Hayes clarified that Democrats do not oppose the deportation of individuals who have committed crimes or are residing in the country illegally. She stated, "Democrats are not opposed to someone who has committed a crime, or is here illegally" being deported. Nonetheless, she highlighted the due process concerns raised by opponents of the Laken Riley Act. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Hayes's reflections underscore the complexities lawmakers face in balancing security measures with fair treatment of immigrants.
