In an uncommonly candid interview, Usha Vance, wife of Vice President J.
D. Vance, shared her transformative journey from being a "largely anonymous spouse of a U.S. senator from a flyover state" to becoming the nation's second lady.
She revealed how her life took a dramatic turn when her husband was selected as President Donald Trump's running mate, and how she was wholeheartedly embraced by the MAGA movement.
According to Fox News, Usha Vance, in her first interview since her husband's election to the vice presidency, recounted the day before J.D. Vance was chosen. "I was working as a lawyer, and I had the wardrobe of a person with three children who likes to do things outdoors, who has a dog, who doesnt like things to be too precious," she said. "And then, a switch flipped, and its not like it came with a whole new wardrobe and stylist and everything."
Usha Vance first caught the public's attention at the Republican National Convention in July, where she donned a cobalt-blue Badgley Mischka dress, with minimal jewelry and makeup. As reported by fashion outlet WWD, she did not consult with the designers behind the $495 dress she wore to the convention. A spokesperson for Badgley Mischka confirmed that she "must have purchased the frock on her own at retail."
When asked about her experience as an Indian-American woman in the MAGA movement, Usha Vance responded with humor. "I'm laughing because it would be really hard for me to be blonde," she said, adding, "that color would look totally absurd."
The former Senator Vance was a powerful advocate for the Trump 2024 campaign, leading to their victory in November. Usha Vance, who prefers to let her hair age naturally, offered some insight into her reception by the MAGA movement. "For what its worth, my reception into this worldand Im not from a particularly wealthy background, not from a very fashion-oriented background personally or professionallyhas been really positive," she said. "People dont seem to care all that much what I look like."
Usha Vance is a highly accomplished lawyer who has clerked for Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, before he ascended to the highest court. She also shared how her family life has been impacted by the occasional negative attention her husband receives.
During a visit to The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on March 13, Usha and the vice president were expecting a pleasant evening out. However, their plans were disrupted by hecklers who interrupted the start of the concert they were attending. "I dont think we anticipated that anyone would really notice," she said.
The incident was recorded by concertgoers and quickly gained national attention on social media. Usha was reportedly "perplexed" by the situation, and described it as "a really good example of reporting in search of a narrative that tends to occur." She added, "We just go to concerts, right?" This incident underscores the unexpected challenges that come with her new role, but Usha Vance remains undeterred, maintaining her authenticity amidst the whirlwind of political life.
