An employee of Jackson Hewitt was caught on camera advising illegal immigrants in New York City on how to secure tax refunds of up to $14,000, irrespective of their employment status, as the tax season looms.

This revelation came to light through the efforts of Savanah Hernandez, a contributor to Turning Point USA, who was reporting outside the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. Hernandez observed a Jackson Hewitt table distributing flyers to illegal immigrants. The flyers, written in Spanish, encouraged individuals to file taxes to obtain the maximum refund for their families, stating, Working or not, file your taxes and we can get the maximum refund for your family. The flyer further detailed that individuals with three children could potentially receive over $14,000.

According to The Post Millennial, Hernandez recounted that the employee who initially handed her the flyer quickly retracted it upon realizing her identity as a journalist. When questioned about the company's involvement in assisting migrants with tax refunds, an employee confirmed, Yes. Another employee mentioned that similar services are offered at all the shelters.

The Roosevelt Hotel, where the tabling occurred, has been dubbed the new Ellis Island due to its function as a processing hub for the influx of over 230,000 migrants arriving in New York City from the summer of 2022 to January 2024, as reported by Bloomberg. The hotel, which closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, has since served as a migrant shelter.

However, Mayor Eric Adams recently announced its closure as a migrant shelter by June. Meanwhile, a new shelter with 2,200 beds for single migrant men has opened in the Bronx, as noted by Hernandez. The city has allocated $7 billion to address the migrant crisis over recent years.
