In a recent turn of events, President Donald Trump and Janet Mills, the Democratic Governor of Maine, found themselves in a heated exchange during a working session of the Governors Association at the White House.
The bone of contention was the contentious issue of male athletes participating in women's sports. The Trump administration had earlier threatened to withdraw funding from the University of Maine system for not complying with his executive order that prohibited such competition. In response to this, the University of Maine acquiesced to the terms. Subsequently, President Trump demanded an unequivocal apology from Governor Mills for her conduct.
According to RedState, Governor Mills responded on Tuesday, demonstrating an apparent disconnect from the prevailing sentiment in the country. She refused to apologize or acknowledge that her stance on this divisive issue is at odds with the majority of the public. The consensus among most Americans is that men should not compete against women in sports.
However, Mills refused to concede that this was the central issue. "My issue is about the rule of law, pure and simple," Mills stated. "It's not about transgender sports; it's about who makes the laws and who enforces the laws." She seemed to sidestep the fact that the executive order in question was specifically about transgender sports, which was the topic of Trump's address at the White House and the reason the Agriculture Department threatened to withhold funding.
Governor Mills continued to evade the crux of the matter, choosing instead to discuss other topics. "I read the Constitution. The Constitution says that the president, the chief executive, shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed. It doesn't allow him to make laws out of whole cloth by tweet or Instagram post or press release or executive order," she said.
In addition to this, Mills criticized Trump for his position on abortion and tariffs, without once mentioning the president by name. Despite her claims of advocating for the protection of women and girls, she supports a policy that is potentially harmful and unfair to females. "We've seen policies that threaten women and girls across the country," Mills said. "If the current occupant of the White House wants to protect women and girls, he should start by protecting the women and teenage girls who are suffering miscarriages and dying because they can't get basic, life-saving healthcare in states across the country.
Governor Mills' stance on this issue seems to be at odds with the majority of Americans. Polls indicate that 80 percent of the American public does not believe it is fair for men to compete against women in sports, taking away trophies and scholarship opportunities from females, while also jeopardizing their safety.
The question remains: Is this the policy that Governor Mills supports? A recent incident in Maine saw a male athlete winning the girls state pole vault title, competing in the girls division. This victory not only secured the individual title for the male athlete but also clinched the overall state championship for his girls team by a single point.
Governor Mills' continued support for such policies could potentially lead to similar election results as those witnessed in November. It remains to be seen whether this will serve as a wake-up call for the Democrats or if they will continue to uphold policies that are seemingly out of touch with the majority of Americans.
