In a recent interview with NewsNation's Chris Cuomo, John Morgan, a former major donor to the Democratic Party, expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of Senator Bernie Sanders' anti-oligarchy tour, which features Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Morgan contended that the efforts of these two prominent progressive figures might inadvertently energize supporters of President Donald Trump.
The "Fighting Oligarchy" tour, initiated by Sanders in February, aims to rally against economic inequality, with Ocasio-Cortez joining him at several events. However, as reported by the Daily Caller, Morgan, who has previously criticized Vice President Kamala Harris' 2024 campaign, suggested that Democrats might be better served by stepping back rather than overtly opposing the Trump administration. "Its a mistake I agree with [Democratic strategist James] Carville," Morgan remarked when questioned about the duo's focus on "the oligarchs."
James Carville, a seasoned Democratic strategist, had previously penned an opinion piece for the New York Times, arguing that Democrats should adopt a passive approach, predicting that Republicans would eventually falter on their own. Morgan echoed this sentiment, stating, "Look, the new [Democratic National Committee] says this to me: They learned nothing from the last election. What they need to do, Chris, is they need to do nothing."
He further elaborated, "They need to let the dumpster fire rage. Let everybody suffer, fight back, push back, be against it, but at the end of the day, Carville is right. Let the dumpster burn, get a lawn chair, get some popcorn, watch it. That will do more."
Morgan also highlighted how Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez inadvertently galvanize Trump's base, saying, "See, AOC and Bernie [galvanize] MAGA because MAGA hates them and the thing MAGA loves the most other than what they love, they love watching them twisting and turning." He likened this to a cruel pastime, adding, "They liked to tear the wing off the fly and watch the flower walk around in a circle on the table. They enjoy that as much as they enjoy destroying the Department of Education."
The political landscape appears challenging for Democrats, as recent CNN/SSRS and NBC News polls indicate their favorability has plummeted below 30%. Mark Penn, a former pollster for the Clinton administration, also sounded the alarm over the potential consequences of Ocasio-Cortez challenging Senator Chuck Schumer in the 2028 primary. "I dont think shes going to challenge Schumer, but if she does, I mean, already the Democratic ratings are down to 29%. Ive never seen anything like it," Penn observed. He warned that such a move could alienate moderates and further weaken the party, drawing a parallel to the Labour Party's decade-long struggle.
Meanwhile, President Trump's approval rating has reached a peak of 47%, the highest across both of his terms, according to the NBC News poll. This development underscores the potential pitfalls for Democrats as they navigate a politically charged environment, where traditional values and conservative principles continue to resonate with a significant portion of the electorate.
