In a recent interview on Breitbart News Daily, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) described the Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., as a "stain" on the city that fostered division rather than unity.
The congressman, who was instrumental in orchestrating its removal, shared his insights on the process and the implications of this development.
According to Breitbart, Clyde detailed his strategic approach to ensure the plaza's removal. He introduced a bill stipulating that the mayor of Washington was obligated to dismantle the BLM Plaza or face a 50 percent cut in their transportation funds. This would equate to a significant loss of approximately $160 million. "You know what I've learned here in Washington is nobody responds at all to anything unless you threaten the money supply. And so money is leverage, and so we use that leverage," Clyde explained.
The congressman further revealed that within 24 hours, Mayor Bowser succumbed to the pressure. "She conceded, and she said, 'Okay, we're going to remove the BLM Plaza. It's just not on my priority list to fight. You know, we're concerned about this incredible loss of funding, and with all these people losing their federal jobs due to the restructuring of the executive branch under President Trump' which I think is such a beautiful thing," he said. Clyde commended the mayor for acknowledging the divisive nature of the BLM plaza and agreeing to its removal.
Clyde was critical of the BLM organization, describing it as a "radical left-wing, defund-the-police organization that has no business being promoted in our capital city, in Washington, D.C., especially one block in front of the White House." He expressed his satisfaction that the plaza was being removed, a sentiment echoed by host Mike Slater, who noted that President Donald Trump had shared footage of the demolition.
The congressman emphasized the importance of unity in Washington, D.C., and expressed his belief that the plaza had been a symbol of division. He stated, "It has been a stain ever since I came to D.C. in 2021. All right, it has been an issue for me, and there's got to, you know, I've been thinking, there's got to be a way to get rid of it." He expressed his conviction that such a move would not have been possible under a Democrat administration.
Clyde also took the opportunity to critique the Democrats, claiming they were in disarray and lacked a clear message. He attributed this to the influence of President Trump, stating, "President Trump has broken them. You know, Trump derangement syndrome is real and is, you know, catching more Democrats and more Democrats." He concluded by expressing his belief that the removal of the plaza, while a small act, held significant symbolic value in putting the country back on the right track.
