A tragic incident involving a 26-year-old Haitian man has cast a spotlight on the controversial migrant program initiated under former President Joe Biden.
Mackendy Darbouze, a Haitian national, stands accused of the brutal murder of three family members: 77-year-old Beatrice Desir, a 13-year-old, and a 4-year-old. The violent episode unfolded on February 21st, when police responded to a distress call, ultimately discovering the victims and a bloodied knife in Darbouze's room. "Police responded to a 911 call at a residence, and a search revealed three deceased individuals and a bloody knife. Darbouze was arrested by the responding officers, announced ICE.
According to One America News, Darbouze's entry into the United States was facilitated by the CHNV parole program, a Biden-era initiative aimed at curbing illegal border crossings by allowing migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to enter the country legally. However, critics argue that the program merely served as a loophole to increase the number of migrants without officially counting them as illegal entries.
ICE confirmed that Darbouze, who only speaks Creole, was interviewed with the assistance of translation services and subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He is currently detained at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
The CHNV parole program, which has allowed over 530,000 individuals from the aforementioned countries to enter the U.S. with the aid of sponsors, has faced mounting criticism. "Through the CHNV parole program, over 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans have lawfully and safely entered the United States with the help of U.S.-based sponsors," stated the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. Yet, the program's efficacy is questioned, as statistics indicate it has not significantly reduced illegal entries.
The program's scrutiny intensified following a separate incident involving Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan national who, after being paroled into the U.S. under CHNV, was involved in the fatal attack on a University of Georgia student.
